The skull is one of the most recognizable images across all cultures and it takes a variety of guises from realist depictions to stylized and simplified versions. Perhaps the potency of meaning has been lost as it becomes a symbol for childhood games of pirates or a purely decorative element in fashion and home decor. It has almost become a genre in itself.

With these factors in mind I have started to approach the imagery in a variety of techniques and styles to try to understand the appeal and function of the form. It is an ongoing examination and the work will take the form of paintings, drawings and prints.
